Common Drain Cleaning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Drains that are blocked are something that can’t be ignored. While you have to take action quickly, there are a few drain cleaning mistakes you should avoid at all costs when attempting to unclog a drain.

Chemical Meltdown

When you have a blocked drain, one solution most people think of is to use chemicals to clear it. There are plenty of drain cleaning chemicals available today, that make huge promises.

However, more often than not, they fail to live up to their promises. Depending on the blockage you are dealing with, they may worsen the problem and increase your frustration.

If you have solids that are blocking your drains, it is highly unlikely that chemicals will clean them effectively. And, if the chemical is harsh and still fails to dissolve the blockage, you are stuck with not only the blockage but the chemicals within the drain. Drain cleaning chemicals are extremely toxic and often end up doing more harm than good.

Incorrect Plunging

One of the first tools you will reach for when dealing with a blockage will be a plunger. There are several different ones available, and they are all made for different types of drains. So, if you want to get the job done right the first time, you must use the right plunger. Sink plungers come with a bell-shaped bottom. Toilet plungers, however, come with a flat bottom. So even if you do have the right plunger, you must make sure you are using it correctly.

Place it over the drain and make sure to completely seal it. Push the plunger gently and precisely, up and down. This is because if you plunge too fast, you could end up pushing some of the matter that is blocking the drain further down.
